LACROSSE SURVIVES LUXEMBURG IMCA MOD SLUGFEST
(Luxemburg, WI) April 24 – Hometown driver Benji LaCrosse dodged several cautions and fought off defending track champion Brian Mullen of Seymour to win the season opening, 22 lap IMCA modified feature at Luxemburg Speedway Friday night.
A total of 151 cars were on hand, including 46 IMCA modifieds, 41 IMCA stock cars, 31 IMCA northern sportmods, 19 IMCA hobby stocks and 15 sport fours.
LaCrosse took the lead, slipping past Cross Plains driver Tim Lemirande for the lead on a lap 13 restart. The pair traded the top spot for the next few laps. Attrition was high in the contest, as only nine cars of the original 24 that started the race were running when the checkers flew. Mullen took second place, followed by Kyle Lentz in his best outing ever at the track with a third. Former track champions Eddie Muenster and Jared Siefert placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Kewaunee’s Greg Gretz slipped past Bob Waechter for the lead on lap 16 and hung on to win the caution filled, 20 lap IMCA stock car feature. Kyle Wanner sliced his way through the rough and tumble contest to claim second, followed by Troy Muench, Mike Gilson and Ben Kroll.
A pair of Travis’, both sporting the number two, squared off in the IMCA northern sportmod feature, with Travis Van Straten leading from the drop of the green, and holding off Travis Cain to win the caution free, 18 lap feature.
Cain closed in on Van Straten in the final laps, but Van Straten threaded his way through lapped cars and hung on for the win. Cain settled for second, followed by Chad Nelson, Tracy Wassenberg and Troy Jerovetz.
Denmark’s Tom Brumlic emerged victorious in the 15 lap IMCA hobby stock feature. Trailing Brumlic at the finish was Scott Boulanger, Tyler Wilson, Frank Paul and Jared Van Lannen.
Defending track champion Jason Cornelius of Oneida swept action in the sport four class, winning both his heat race and feature event.
A pair of red flag incidents were thrown for rollovers. IMCA modified driver Shawn Frelich of Kaukauna rolled his mount, winding up on it’s side during the semi-feature. Greenleaf’s Jamie Colwell hooked the berm in the IMCA stock car feature, launching his racer into a rollover which halted action. Both drivers emerged unhurt.
