(LUXEMBURG, WI) May 14– Little Suamico’s Sean Jerovetz fought off a late race surge by DePere’s Jay Matthias to capture the 25 lap IMCA modified feature at Luxemburg Speedway Friday night. With his heat win Jerovetz scored a sweep for the evening.
A total of 135 cars signed in to do battle, including 30 IMCA modifeds, 26 stock cars, 38 northern sportmods, 24 hobby stocks and 17 sport fours.
Jerovetz sprinted into the lead from his pole position and maintained the lead. A lap seven caution flew for a Lance Arneson spin, which tightened the field. On the restart Matthias stepped up to challenge Jerovetz, racing side-by-side for several laps and leading a lap in the process. Jerovetz was able to fight off Matthias to collect the win. Matthias settled for second at the pay window, followed by former Green Bay track champions Eddie Muenster and Jared Siefert. Mishicot’s Kyle Kudick rounded out the top five.
Kewaunee’s Brad Theys slipped past Luxemburg’s Scott Boulanger for the lead on lap three and dodged a pair of caution periods to win the 18 lap IMCA northern sportmod feature. Green Bay’s Josh Long took second. Green Bay’s Troy Jerovetz, who qualified into the main event by winning a semi-feature, charged from 18th to take third. Oconto’s Travis Cain did the same, winning the other semi-feature and slicing his way from 19th to take fourth. New Franken’s Brad Lautenbach rounded out the top five finishers.
Polesitter Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee fought off a late race charge from Kewaunee’s Greg Gretz to win the 20 lap IMCA stock car feature.
Bruechert gave up his early lead to New Franken’s Troy Muench on lap six. Muench began to slowly distance himself from Bruechert, but a flat tire with five laps to go thwarted his efforts. Gretz stayed within striking distance in the final laps but Bruechert held on for the win. Gretz took second, followed by Dave De Grave of Luxemburg, Brussels’ Shawn Havel and Pulaski’s Junior Karcz.
Luxemburg’s Wes Salentine scored a clean sweep in the IMCA hobby stock division, winning his heat and holding off Kewaunee’s Luke Lemmens to win the 18 lap IMCA hobby stock feature. Lemmens took second, followed by defending track champion Chad Kaminski, who battled his way into the feature by winning the semi-feature. Denmark’s Tom Brumlic and Luxemburg’s Marcus Moede rounded out the top five.
Gillett’s Aaron Dalton, a former asphalt driver at 141 Speedway, earned his first career feature win on the dirt by capturing the 15 lap sport four feature.
The IMCA modified division will see a shakeup in the points battle this year. Defending track champion Brian Mullen got tagged by another car in his heat and was a scratch for the semi-feature. Former track champion Benji LaCrosse finished eighth in the semi-feature and failed to make the main event.
During his heat race 14-year-old rookie Andy Ratajczak barrel rolled his IMCA northern sportmod off the track in turn four. Ratajczak escaped unhurt.
