(LUXEMBURG, WI) April 23 –New Franken’s Shawn Kilgore took the lead at the drop of the green and survived a late race caution to capture the 25 lap IMCA modified feature at the season opening race at Luxemburg Speedway Friday night.
A total of 156 cars signed in to do battle, including 30 IMCA modifeds, 32 stock cars, 43 northern sportmods, 22 hobby stocks and 29 sport fours.
Kilgore quickly built up a sizable lead over the field, getting into lapped cars as early as lap 13. Kilgore was able to skillfully weave through traffic to seal the win. Kilgore’s half lap lead was erased with six laps to go. With the field tightened up, Kilgore picked up where he left off and sprinted out to a lead. A caution flew with three laps to go but with a curfew pending the checkers were thrown and Kilgore earned the win. Green Bay’s Kyle Lentz took second, followed by Frog Station’s Dan Ratajczak, Seymour’s Brian Mullen and Green Bay’s Jared Siefert.
Driving a brand new race car built by his cousin Ben Kroll of New Franken, Forestville’s Charlie Kroll passed his cousin for the lead on lap 13 and cruised to victory in the IMCA stock car feature. Ben Kroll hung on for second, followed by Gillett’s Kyle Frederick, Green Bay’s John Heinz and Kewaunee’s Greg Gretz. Casco’s Matt Junio placed sixth after making his way into the feature via a semi feature.
Hortonville’s Travis Van Straten slipped past Eric Arneson with three laps to go to capture the caution filled IMCA northern sportmod feature.
Arneson settled for second place money, followed by Green Bay drivers Josh Long, Troy Jerovetz and Oconto’s Travis Cain. Sturgeon Bay’s Ryan LeMieux charged through the field from 20th to finish sixth after qualifying into the feature by winning a semi-feature.
You could have thrown a blanket over the front running cars as the checkers flew at the line for the IMCA hobby stock feature. When the dust settled Denmark’s Tom Brumlic emereged atop the scrum, followed by Algoma’s Marcus Moede, Kewaunee’s Luke Lemmens, Luxemburg’s Chad Kaminski and Casco’s Derek Moede.
The IMCA hobby stock feature was halted on the first lap after Kewaunee’s Frank Paul made contact with another car, sending his machine into a barrel roll in turn one. The event was red flagged, and Paul escaped unhurt.
Defending track champion Jason Cornelius swept action in the sport four division, winning both the heat and the time shortened sport four feature.
