(Luxemburg, WI) May 27 — West De Pere high school senior Johnny “Hitman” Whitman took the lead at the drop of the green and cruised to victory in the caution free 25 lap IMCA modified feature at Luxemburg Speedway Friday night. The win was the first for the rookie driver.
Two other drivers scored their first career division wins as well. Green Bay’s Eric Mahlik performed the same fete in the IMCA northern sportmod feature and Algoma’s Dave Schmidt followed suit in the IMCA hobby stock feature.
123 Cars showed up to compete, including 24 IMCA modifieds, 35 stock cars, 31 northern sport mods, 19 hobby stocks and 14 sport fours.
Whitman quickly distanced himself from the field from jump street, leaving RM Van Pay, Sean Jerovetz and Dan Ratajczak to throw down for the runnerup spot. Van Pay wound up second at the pay window, followed by Jerovetz, Ratajczak and Benji LaCrosse.
Mahlik started fifth on the grid, and stuck with early race leader Mike Joski of New Franken and passed him for the lead on lap six. Mahlik skillfully threaded his way through lapped cars the balance of the way to collect the win. Pulaski’s JJ Anderson wrestled second away from Joski in the final laps to take second. Joski took third, followed by defending track champion Troy Jerovetz of Green Bay and New Franken’s Brad Lautenbach.
Shawano’s Shawn “Lunchbox” Wagner caught Hortonville’s Justin Jacobsen and repassed him with 10 laps to go and went on to win the IMCA stock car feature. Wagner had the early lead and was passed by Jacobsen on lap five. Wagner poured the coals to his Wolfe Chassis and chased Jacobsen down and passed him five laps later. Jacobsen, Ben Kroll, Bob Waechter and Kyle Frederick took second through fifth, respectively.
Schmidt battled hometown driver Wes Salentine down to the wire, emerging triumphant in capturing his first ever IMCA hobby stock feature. The contest was shortened to 14 laps due to a time limit, caused by seven yellows. Salentine took second, followed by Algoma’s Travis Hackett, Denmark’s Tom Brumlic and Luxemburg’s George Paul.
Pulaski’s Sam Ambrosius captured the sport four feature.
For the second straight week a quartet of violent wrecks forced brief delays in the program. In an IMCA stock car heat Casco’s Matt Junio collided with another car coming out of turn four, sending his car into multiple rollovers on the frontstretch. Junio emerged shaken but unhurt but his car sustained heavy damage.
In the IMCA stock car last chance race, Saukville’ visitor Roger Johnson’s car slammed into the frontstretch wall coming out of turn four. Johnson was also shaken, but unhurt while his car was destroyed. Track crews were needed to reinforce three large concrete barriers that were knocked back.
In the IMCA northern sportmod feature Eric “Chummy” Arneson rolled over in turn four after making contact with a car. After rolling, Arneson refired his car, drove on pit lane and rejoined the field on the lead lap.
In the IMCA hobby stock feature Green Bay’s Mike Mueller and Luxemburg’s Tyler “Flip” Dorn crashed and both wound up flipping onto their roofs in turn two. Both drivers were ok.
