April 13, 2002; Luxemburg, WI. - More than 35 cars in five different divisions turned out on a bright, sunny day during Luxemburg Speedway's annual pre-season car show and safety inspection held at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds Saturday.
A sizeable crowd of curious race fans also turned up to see the sparkling new machines. Trophies were awarded to drivers for best appearing car or truck in their respective divisions. In the IMCA modifieds hometown driver Dave Zeitler took home top honors. The Luxemburg veteran's number 84 racer has been a weekly fixture at Luxemburg's third-mile, clay oval for many seasons. It was Kewaunee's Greg Gretz who was voted best appearing car in the IMCA stock car division. Gretz and his number 24 Ford Thunderbird competed weekly not only at Luxemburg, but also at Door County Speedway and Seymour Tri-Oval Raceway in 2001, getting valuable seat time. Sturgeon Bay's Mike Soukup hauled home the hardware for best appearing street stock with his brightly colored number 96 racer. Bomber rookie Derrick Moede of Casco and third year sport truck driver Dean Wiltzius of New Franken also won best appearing car or truck awards in their divisions, respectively. In the next two weeks Luxemburg Speedway will become a flurry of activity as several maintenance projects will take place on the grounds. "We've got a new public address system coming and we're expanding the pits this year," said track manager Rick Goral. "We're going to spruce the place up a bit, paint some fencing and tires. We were able to get the grandstand pressure-washed. There are some other things in the works as well that need to get done before our opener." That season opener will be Friday night, April 26 at 7 p.m. IMCA modifieds, IMCA stock cars and street stocks will compete weekly while sport trucks, bombers and the track's new four cylinder sport fours will compete at the third-mile, clay oval every third week.
