Carlson Leads "Southerners" to Luxemburg June 11th!
By Joe Verdegan

May 26, 2004; Luxemburg, WI. - The only time Greenfield's Chris Carlson has seen Luxemburg Speedway was on
a videotape of a late model race run at the third-mile clay oval back in 1988.

He was a crew member for driver Cindy Peterson at the time. Carlson will get an up close and personal look at the track Friday June 11 when the Wisconsin Dirt Late Model Association (WDLMA) invades Luxemburg for the Seubert Calf Ranches "Battle of The 'Burg III" beginning at 7 p.m.

"I've never stepped foot in the place but I've heard a lot of good thing about it," said Carlson, who is one  of a select few dirt late model racers in Wisconsin who can claim to race stock cars for a living. "I know  all of the Milwaukee area drivers are looking forward to racing up there. It sounds like a smaller version of Hales Corners. We're looking forward to racing against all of the tough locals up that way."

The 33-year-old Carlson has raced dirt late models for eight seasons and is scored recent victories at  tracks in Macon, Illinois and Crown Point, Indiana. "We've been averaging racing three nights a  eek so far," said Carlson. "We're going to hit as many of these series shows as we can. I think they're headed in the right direction in terms of trying to control engine and tire costs."

Joining Carlson in the southern contingent of drivers is nine time Hales Corners Speedway champion Russ Scheffler of Waukesha. Scheffler last competed in the inaugural Battle of The Burg event in 2002 where he placed third driving a WISSOTA car owned by Danny Gracyalny. Others Milwaukee-area drivers expected are Russ' brother Rick Scheffler, his father George Scheffler, Somers' Al Atkinson, Brookfield's  TJ Dolhun, Dan Sorce of West Allis, Bobby Smith of South Milwaukee, Jim Zdroik of Big Bend and Jim Germek.

"We're expecting our largest car count of the season," said series president Brian Konopka. "With the $250 cash bonus thrown in from Central Services the winner of this 40 lap feature will take home $1,750. With the WISSOTA locals who will be there this show could very well hit 40 cars. That'd be great."

A passing points system will be used to determine the feature lineups. A full program of IMCA modifieds, IMCA stock cars and IMCA hobby stocks will also take place. Overnight camping is available on the grounds. For more information call 920 863 8446. The track phone is 920 845 2300. The track website is www.luxemburgspeedway.com.
