Kertscher
Claims First IRA Sprint Car Feature at Luxemburg!
By Joe Verdegan |
July 3, 2005;
Luxemburg, WI. - Fillmore's Mike Kertscher executed a flawless three wide
pass on lap five and sweated out a late race caution.
with three laps remaining to win his first 40 lap Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw
sprint car feature at Luxemburg Speedway Sunday night.
Seymour's Brian Mullen took the lead off of a lap 10 restart and went on to win the $1,000
25 lap modified feature. Mullen also won his heat sweeping the division for the evening.
A total of 35 sprint cars were on hand along with 23 modifieds. Kertscher skillfully
worked the high side on the third-mile, clay oval, passing Scott Young and early leader
Billy Warren for the lead on lap five. Kertscher quickly went to work sifting through
lapped cars beginning on lap 10. Donny Goeden and Young ran wing-to-wing for several
laps, with Goeden wrestling second away on lap 15. While Kertscher weaved his way through
lapped traffic Goeden was able to keep the leader well within his sights. Defending series
champion Scotty Neitzel tangled with a couple of cars on lap 37, setting up a three lap
dash to the checkers. When racing resumed Kertscher kept his challengers at bay to collect
the win. Goeden took second, followed by Kurt Winker, Brian Kristan and Billy Warren.
Mullen and Jeremy Jacobs traded the lead three times during the first ten laps of the
modified main. The pair pulled away from the field when a caution flew for a Jerry
Muenster spin on lap 10. On the restart Mullen snuck down to the low groove and protected
his lead, with Jacobs and Benji LaCrosse in tow. Jacobs dropped out with mechanical
problems on lap 15 and LaCrosse began closing in on Mullen. LaCrosse stayed glued to
Mullen's rear bumper until a BG Woods spin on lap 17 tightened the field once again.
With eight laps remaining Mullen continued to hug the lower groove and fought off a
tenacious LaCrosse for the victory. Sean Jerovetz took third, followed by Jay Matthias and
visitor Mike Sandholm from Oconomwoc.
Next Friday night, July 8 Concrete Finishers will sponsor the Kid's Coin Toss. Special
door prizes will be given away. All four weekly divisions will be in action along with the
third appearance of the season of the street stocks. Racing gets underway at 7 p.m.
